Happy New Year!

UpWrite Press enters the new year with many exciting projects in the works. We're just days away from unveiling a revised Web site. Shortly after that, we'll be releasing Write for Work, a work-text for students in 1- and 2-year degree or school-to-work programs. In future issues of eTips, we'll be revealing other print and electronic products to be published this year. And of course, we'll attend a full slate of conventions, including NBEA, SHRM, and ASTD, among others. Watch this newsletter, our blog, and our Facebook and Twitter posts for more information.

We hope that 2010 is shaping up to be exciting for you, as well. Rest assured that we'll be here to support your writing and training needs.

Ethics in Business Writing

It has been said that character is what you do when no one is watching. The same can be said for business ethics, the principles you employ in your transactions. Do you apply those same principles in your business writing, even if few readers would notice a slip? Here are some guidelines to ensure that your written materials demonstrate the highest ethics.

  • Be honest and open. Present all information as accurately as possible, and do not suppress important details.
  • Be objective. Present both sides of an issue where applicable, and resist bias that skews results or issues.
  • Be clear. Make sure your written information is easy to follow and understand. Get feedback on your writing, especially on a technical piece, to be certain it is comprehensible before presenting or sending it.
  • Be considerate. How will the piece impact the reader? Consider the consequences of any recommendations or projections, and let your words show that you understand your reader’s feelings.
  • Be positive. Avoid negativity and potentially offensive language. Never demean your coworkers or company, and don’t spread rumors or gossip.
  • Be sensitive. Be aware of cultural diversity, and avoid any type of discrimination. Do not use language-based humor, as someone of another culture may not get the joke or, worse, may be offended by it.
  • Be loyal to your company. Follow any company policies, mission statements, or codes, including standard formats for written communications.

Finally, in everything you write, let your personal integrity guide you. If your message is honest and clear, advocating only the highest moral and legal standards, you can be sure that your business writing will be welcomed and appreciated.

That Little Extra

Ah, how delightful to see slim shafts of sunlight streaming through our windows on these frigid winter days. Yet, did you notice the little bright motes drifting through those sunny spikes? Well, those charming little floaters are dust particles (we won't discuss what they are made of), and those pretty little bits can cause big problems for your electronics! To keep your computer and peripherals working properly, make sure they are dust free. One good, safe way to handle dust is with canned air that shoots a concentrated blast at the touch of a button. These spray cans are especially great for cleaning keyboards and other little spaces in your equipment. You can find them at any office supply store or department. It's a small investment to protect your expensive equipment.
